What we do

Our Vision

There are no barriers to learning for children from low-income backgrounds in the North of England.

Our Mission

We develop and fund innovative and sustainable programmes that work to improve educational outcomes for children living in areas of deprivation in the North of England.

Grant funding

We fund promising innovations to address educational challenges.

We use grant funding to unlock potential among teachers who otherwise struggle to find the time to develop new practice or to share their ideas.

More than half of SHINE funds support teachers’ time directly, with technology, resources and evaluation costs being the key other cost items.

We specialise in backing early-stage ideas, and we help support the most promising programmes on a journey to scale.

We also nurture collaborations between schools which enable them to tackle shared challenges and address local barriers to attainment.

Support

We connect teachers to networks of support to help ideas reach their full potential.

Our dedicated programme team are there to support you every step of the way, from initial application discussions, through to analysing and reporting your impact.

We provide support to help you evaluate impact, to help scale up effective practice, and to communicate your success.

We work with external partners where needed to help connect teachers to a broader network of help and advice.

We also provide regular opportunities for teachers to connect together with other innovators who are driving positive educational change across the North.

Insight

We measure the impact of our projects and share our findings to influence positive change for children.

By analysing and understanding what works, we are able to continually learn about the most effective approaches for children.

We give voice to the perspectives and views of teachers whose insights and knowledge can otherwise be overlooked.

We also work with aligned partners on advocating for positive policy changes for disadvantaged children in the North.

Scaling

We scale-up innovations which show the strongest impact and help them secure a long-term future.

We provide further funding to innovations which show evidence of promise, and we help them develop models to support wider delivery at scale.

This helps teachers improve outcomes for more children by sharing effective practice and building a culture of innovation and impact across the North.
