The team at SHINE is deeply saddened to learn of the death of our Patron Sir Howard Bernstein, who passed away on Saturday, aged 71.

Sir Howard believed passionately that access to a good education is a basic right, and one of the foundations of our society.

The former Manchester City Council Chief Executive spearheaded the regeneration of the city and is widely credited with helping to shape modern Manchester.

He was knighted for his services to the city in 2003.

Sir Howard was also a former President of Lancashire County Cricket Club and Honorary President of Manchester City FC.

SHINE CEO Fiona Spellman said: “It was with great sadness that we learned of the untimely death of Sir Howard.

“He was a remarkable man who leaves a lasting legacy in the city he loved so much. He will be sorely missed.”
