How philanthropy can help shape the UK’s future
A discussion with Lord O’Neill hosted by JPMorgan explored the UK’s economic outlook, the role of education and how philanthropy can help improve opportunities for children
On 30 September, SHINE was delighted to be hosted by colleagues at JPMorgan for a thought-provoking discussion with the Lord O’Neill, exploring the forces shaping our world and the role philanthropy can play in influencing its future.
The conversation brought together three interconnected themes. We began by exploring the current political landscape, the fiscal realities facing government and the mood ahead of the forthcoming Budget. We then turned to the role of philanthropy in education, considering how organisations like SHINE can help unlock opportunities for children who might otherwise miss out. Finally, we looked at the global economic outlook and the UK’s place in an increasingly uncertain and changing landscape.
Running through these discussions was a shared question: how does the UK remain competitive in a fast-changing world? At SHINE, we believe that investing in education is a vital part of the answer. By backing promising ideas, supporting exceptional teachers and helping effective approaches reach more children, philanthropy can play a powerful role in improving educational outcomes and boosting growth.
We were delighted to welcome such an engaged and thoughtful group of people and grateful for the opportunity to share more about SHINE’s work and ambitions. Conversations like these are an important reminder of what philanthropy can achieve when insight, resources and a shared commitment to better outcomes for children come together.
