Beyond quick fixes: a long-term investment in Hartlepool’s future

With the opening of the new IntoUniversity Hartlepool Centre recently, a major piece of a long-term plan for the town’s young people has fallen into place.

IntoUniversity is working in Hartlepool in partnership with SHINE and The Tutor Trust, linking literacy support, pupil tutoring, and aspiration building into one clear pathway for the town.

Separately, these education charities have already proven they can help students succeed. Together, they offer something more ambitious: a focused, years-long commitment to Hartlepool’s children, replacing “one-off” fixes with a steady stream of support.

Too often, philanthropy flows into big cities where results are often easier to achieve and more visible. But real change is harder work: it requires a willingness to back local ambition in towns that have been overlooked, and the grit to stay the course.

Backing people, not just projects

At the heart of this work is a belief in local leadership. Real change in Hartlepool won’t happen overnight, and it won’t happen by “parachuting in” for a few months.

This isn’t a temporary solution. These programmes are putting down roots in the town, focusing on the long-term work of building relationships with the teachers, students, and parents we serve.

This kind of commitment matters. Educational inequality is complex. Progress depends on consistency, trust, and a willingness to support young people throughout their journey.

Different pieces of the same puzzle

You can’t fix education by looking at one classroom or one issue in isolation. From early literacy to academic support and aspiration-building, every stage matters. That is why this partnership is so vital:

  • Hartlepool Reads secures the basics, ensuring children have the reading skills they need to feel confident the moment they start school.
  • The Tutor Trust provides high-quality tutoring, supporting pupils to build confidence and close attainment gaps.
  • IntoUniversity offers a long-term programme of academic support, mentoring, and aspiration-raising, helping young people see and reach new possibilities.

None of these organisations can do everything. But together, they address different parts of the educational jigsaw, creating a more coherent, sustained pathway of support for young people in Hartlepool.

This work is made possible by the John Armitage Charitable Trust. Their belief in this partnership has allowed us to bring these three organisations together to work for the people of Hartlepool.

Dr Rachel Carr, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of IntoUniversity, said: “We are really excited to be officially launching this new centre in Hartlepool, and are so energised by the experience we’ve had already working with the local young people, their families, schools and the wider community.

“This is a unique collaboration with the John Armitage Charitable Trust which sees them making a massive investment in the futures of young people in the town. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the young people we work with, and thank everyone in the local community for their support in getting the centre up and running.”

Fiona Spellman, CEO of SHINE, said: “It is fantastic to see the opening of the IntoUniversity centre in Hartlepool. No single charity can solve the challenges of educational inequality alone, but together, we are building something powerful and long-lasting for Hartlepool. This is about making sure that every child, no matter their starting point, has a fair shot at a brilliant future.”

Ed Marsh, CEO of The Tutor Trust, said: “High-quality tutoring has a vital role to play in helping young people build confidence and close gaps in their learning, but its impact is strongest when it sits alongside wider support. That is what makes this partnership in Hartlepool so powerful – bringing together literacy, tutoring and aspiration to support young people over the long term. We are proud to be part of a collective effort that is committed to the town and to its future.”
